The thing about momentum is that we can gain it or lose it.

Half of the Year is Here!
I think that most of us can agree that this year has gone by pretty quickly—Where did the time go? Many of us began the year with our visions and goals, some of us have remained on course with our tasks, and some of us have dropped the ball—do these sound pretty accurate? The thing about momentum is that we can gain it or lose it, and sometimes, there are pretty valid reasons as to why we lose it. However, if you have managed to gain it back, that’s amazing!
Let's Take an Honest Assessment
1) When the year began, did you have pertinent goals you told yourself you would work on immediately?
2) How many of them did you start working on?
3) Are you still working on your goals for the year?
4) Do you anticipate fulfilling your pertinent goals by the end of the year?
If you answered any of these questions and discovered that you somehow lost momentum, it’s totally normal. Life can be up, down, and sometimes steady (like a graph), but we must still maintain movement. Many times, people lose enthusiasm after a few months of working at something. That’s why fitness is such an unpredictable goal, because many people lose the “consistency mojo” after a short period of time—Trust me; I know.
While the reasons vary as to why we get off track, the goal should be to start again! Yes, we have to keep going, because “slow and steady wins the race” (a phrase coined by Aesop’s fable The Tortoise and the Hare). You should never overwhelm yourself to the extent that you just stop. People who stick to their goals are usually strong in faith, motivated by outcome, and good with time management. You may possess all of these qualities already, but you may also need to strengthen them if you find yourself constantly getting off track.
How to Get Back on Track!
I have noticed that when I write things down and plan ahead regularly, it really helps me stay on course. You may ask, “What if I do this and still don’t follow through?” My answer would be to modify. Oftentimes, when we can’t stick to what we planned for verbatim, we ditch the plan all together, i.e., “I’m going to the gym this week Mon-Fri right before work.” Let’s say something imperative came up that prevents you from going Tuesday and Wednesday before work, then, consider going after work, or swap it for the weekend, or even doing a little workout at home before bed—something other than dropping it all together!
This has everything to do with mindset, and when we adopt this type of mindset, we can apply it to all areas of our lives. It’s important to give yourself grace, but we don’t want to turn grace into excuses because it can become very difficult to gain back motivation and that beautiful momentum! I would also surround myself with people who have kept their momentum this year as I truly believe we become that which we endow ourselves with regularly. The beautiful part of it all is that—you have chosen to keep going, and you will!
